De Stenen Man Monument Westerzeedijk 1955

Amongst the photographs taken by Sikko Steen and kept in an album there were two that presented us with a monument of some sort. Grandma wrote 'monument afsluitdijk' with it, but that wasn't the case. Searching for monuments on the internet learned us that it was in fact 'the stone man' situated in Harlingen Friesland.

The trip was taken with his friend Theo Hendriks and the children seen are, we think, Theo's sisters.

Drielandenpunt 1956 with Theo Hendriks.

When Sikko arrived from the USA he made a trip to Valkenburg The Netherlands with his friend Theo Hendriks (1956). We still haven't found any relatives of him, so, if you have any information about this person, please feel free to contact us. We know he wasn't an airmen. We know he lived in The Hague at that time.
This picture is taken at 'drielandenpunt', the place where Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands converge.
On this picture Theo and his girlfriend?

T33-A Bryan Air Force Base TR-550 TR-417

Another slide, this time with some T33-A with the words 'T33-A b.a.f.b. ramp' as indication. In the log of Sikko there's a 550 and a 417 as seen on the picture. R.F. Mc Donald was his instructor on the times he flew with this airplane. Since there are two pictures with Maxwell Air Force Base (Beechcraft C45-H) we assume this picture has to be dated the 9th or the 10th of January 1955.

Gila Bend F-84E / F-84G with 3600th sqn / 313th sqn

Yesterday we've seen the documentary 'Klu in the Cold War' Republic F-84E/G Thunderjet published by Centerline. Nice images of the plane Sikko used to fly in 1955. In this documentery they mentioned how flying towards a target was mapped out. Sikko had decorated his logbook with a piece of a map on which suddenly, recoginizable lines had been drawn. A search in Google gave surprising results, how about the numbers on the ground that after all these years are still visible (range 4). Try it yourself, get onto Google Earth and search for Gila Bend. Have fun.

10 july 1956 Sikko Steen postcard home.

Soesterberg, 10th July 1956

Dear everyone,

In contrary to what I said Monday I will be coming home. I can't go visiting The Hague, because they already have a visitor. It's dirty wet weather here, I've done nothing the whole day. Nobody said anything yesterday, I could go on flying. I've been through Mach barrier and it will be all this week because otherwise to much is being done. According to the newspapers it didn't rain as much at your place as it did at ours. I will be coming by train as I think about it now. See you Friday or Saturday. Sincery greeting from your son and brother.
Sikko Steen

This postcard was send at the 10th July 1956. He crashed in the IJsselmeer 13th July 1956. He never made it home again. The postcard arrived after he died.

T33-a line up 1954 Bryan Air Force Base

Tbirds lined up at BAFB, according to Sikko as he's written this on the slide. On one of the airplane a serial number 19096.  We believe the rest of the serial numbers are 19274 / ##225 / ##139.
Perhaps this picture was taken before or after the 4 ship formation exercise as is written in the log on the 31th March 1955.

Tailsection of a T33-a B.A.F.B.

Not much to tell about this slide. It's a tailsection of a T33-a at Bryan Air Force Base. Sikko Steen was stationed there from the 27th of September 1954 up to the 28th of April 1955.

Texan Drive-In / nAa 1955

Texan Drive-In 1955 with National Auto Association sign

Noted with this slide was Bryan Tex'spino or something. We studied the slide and searched the internet. The Texan drive-in's that were mentioned are torn down or closed. Those were in Pecos and Midland. We know Sikko was in Lubbock, perhaps they travelled through Midland and/or Pecos on their way to Los Angelos (or back of course). We don't know that...yet. In the search we found little about the National Auto Association, apart from some memorabilia that you can get on e-bay. Perhaps he just took the picture because the Texan is also an airplane he flew back in 1954 Marana Air Force Base. Perhaps in future we learn more about the restaurant and/or the nAa.

Oklahoma Medicine Park dangerous walkway 1954 with fam. Ashcraft

With this slide came no title. Other slides before and after had the title Oklahoma Medicine Park 1954. What we see here is presumable the family (Robert) Ashcraft as Sikko went on a trip with them. And by the use of Google Earth and Google Maps we found the location; Elm Street. We see a mountain in the back...that turns out to be mountain Scott. Then we see a little bit of water. On moving around we found spot in Google Earth. We can't come any closer as it is locked. But in the background you see the mountain hasn't changed much.

Elm street Oklahoma.

Busy at Bryan Air Force Base 1955

'Being busy Bryan 1955' that's what been written by this slide. It's obvious the person is busy cleaning whatever was spilled. Oil or fuel. Anyway, daily choirs probably. No clue who the person in the picture is. If you know, let us know :-)

T-28a TL-613 1954

On this slide a T-28a with the number TL-613 17613. On the tale the emblem of 'Air Education and Training Command' and the indication Marana, being Marana Air Force Base. Sikko didn't fly this particular plane. He flew 30 times the T-28a from 27th September 1954 until 02th November 1954. On 01th October the first solo flight with this type of plane. He was stationed at 3530th Sturon at that time, though the last two flights on 1th and 2th of November he was stationed at 3531th Pilot Training Squadron.

T-bird refuelling Bryan Air Force Base 1955

On this slide was written 't-bird refuelling Bryan'. This T-33A TR-765 18765 is photographed around 1955. In the background another T-33A with the tailnumber 18980.'In Sikko's log there's no mentioning of the TR-765, so he didn't fly this one. Perhaps he did with the 18980, but we don't know the TR nr of that one.

Pitot cover removed

Sikko Steen 21-01-1935 - 13-07-1956, today he'd be 78 years old.

Image from Bryan Air Force Base around April 1955 Pitot cover removed from a T-33A
There is an 'Air Education and Training Command' emblem on the tail of the other plane T-33A 16944.

Happy New Year!

To all the readers a happy new year. In this picture two flares, seemed appropriate to publish right now. Probably taken during a flight around November 1954, but we don't know for sure.
